The Chakra System

The Chakra system originated in India between 1500BC and 500BC. The word Chakra means ‘Wheel’ or ‘Dish’. It is spelled ‘Cakra’ but is pronounced ‘Chakra’. According to Hindu tradition, The Chakras are described as spinning wheels of energy or light centers that run along the spine to the top of the head. Each Chakra represents a certain part or system of the body. Chakra healing has gained a great deal of popularity in recent years; however, the Chakra system has been studied for thousands of years.

There are seven major or central Chakras located along the spine and they govern different organs, glands and nerves. Each Chakra is associated with a color. Beginning at the bottom is the first Chakra known as the root Chakra and is located at the pubic bone. Its color is red and it symbolizes security, safety and holds the basic needs for survival. This is also the center of manifestation.

The second Chakra is referred to as the Belly (Sacral). It is located two inches below the navel. Its color is orange and holds the basic needs for sexuality, creativity, intuition and self-worth. This Chakra is about emotions and the ability to relate in an open and friendly manner to others.

The third Chakra is referred to as the solar plexus and is located two inches below the breast bone in the center behind the stomach. Its color is yellow and is the center of personal power, the ego, Passion, Impulses, Anger and Strength. It is also the center of astral influences, Receptivity of Spirit guides and psychic development.

The fourth Chakra is referred to as the heart Chakra and is located at the center of the chest area. Its color is green. This is the center of love, compassion and spirituality. This center directs one’s ability to give and receive love. This is also the Chakra that connects body and mind with Spirit.

The fifth Chakra is referred to as the throat. It is located in the neck area and its color is blue. It is the center of communication, using wisdom, truth, purity, right action, self-mastery and balance. The throat is where anger is stored and finally let’s go.

The sixth Chakra is referred to as the third eye and is located in the center of the forehead. Its color is indigo (purple/blue). This is the center for psychic ability and higher intuition. Through the power of the sixth Chakra, you can receive guidance, channel and tune into your higher self.

The seventh Chakra is referred to as the crown and is located at the top of the skull. Its color is purple and is the center of Spirituality, Enlightenment, Dynamic thought and energy which brings the gift of cosmic consciousness. This is also the center of connectedness with God, The place where life animates the physical body.

Outside of the seven central Chakras is the eight (or Gold Sun) Chakra. It is a golden, Sun-like energy center located above the head and outside your Aura and is an energy resource. Your Gold Sun Chakra oversees all aspects including your Spiritual, Mental, Emotional and physical body, also your past, present and future.

There are also ‘Secondary’ Chakras located in the feet and hands. There are no colors associated with these Chakras. The foot Chakra is located between the ball of the foot and the pad just before the toes. The foot Chakras purpose is to be a secondary grounding site. It is also a place to touch earth energies. The hand Chakra is located in the palm of the hand and brings energy in and sends energy out. In some systems this Chakra is attached to the heart Chakra by an energetic pathway that leads up the arm to the heart.

A person’s emotional and physical health is directly dependent on the Chakras so it is important to keep them in balance in order to bring about a healthy Body, Mind, and Spirit.
